Creating Adversaries
A downloadable note on game design
What if combats aren't lethal? What are the consequences of running into your enemy again and again?
I was watching an episode of “Game Maker’s Toolkit” about the Nemesis Mechanic in the Mordor video games and this idea wormed its way in. Inside are my musings on the idea of non-lethal combat encounters and building relationships with your enemies. Have a read and see if it might work in your game.
This is a piece of tech for the Brain Trust Tech Jam inspired by what I learned there.
TLDR: If combat isn't lethal, you can build a relationship with your enemy.
I've also included an excerpt for the Adversary mechanic lifted out of my notes for my overly ambitious, unpublished, dungeon crawling TTRPG called Mountain of Bones.
If you end up using the Adversary mechanic in your game. I would love to hear about it. If you found this at all useful please leave a tip. I would really appreciate it.
